Pecans are the seeds of the very tall and massive pecan tree, which does not begin to bear fruit until 20 years after planting and for its entire 300-year life. It makes its home in North America, where it is widespread in the Mississippi River basin and adjacent river areas.
Pecans are similar to walnuts, but have a milder and sweeter flavour than walnuts. In addition, they are high in fibre and low in carbohydrates (approximately 4 g/100 g) compared to other nuts.
The use of pecans is very wide:
- in breakfast cereals
- as a garnish for desserts
- in salads
- in sweet and savoury dishes
- RAW cuisine
- in combination with dried fruit as a hearty snack
- substitute walnuts in recipes
