Xylitol has about 40% less caloric value than regular sugar (only 2.4 calories per 1 g). It is commonly found in nature in birch, some fruits (e.g. raspberries, plums) or corn and is labeled E967 in food. Like erythritol, it is an alcohol sugar.

It shares only taste, colour and texture with traditional white sugar.

Xylitol is very popular in Finland, which is considered its 'home country'. It is used in the manufacture of confectionery, especially in the production of chewing gum.

Xylitol is good for the teeth. Recent research confirms that it has an effect on reducing plaque by attracting unwanted micro-organisms and then allowing them to 'starve', allowing damaged teeth to remineralise in the mouth (see Finnish study).

Effects

Consumption of foods/beverages containing xylitol instead of sugar leads to a reduction in the rise in blood glucose levels after consumption compared to foods/beverages containing sugar

Consumption of foods/beverages containing xylitol instead of sugar helps to maintain tooth mineralisation

Use

Xylitol has the same sweetness as conventional white sugar, so it can be substituted in recipes at a 1:1 ratio. You can add it to porridge, smoothies or to dough when baking.

Did you know?

Xylitol has a slight cooling effect? You'll feel that in its deliciously sweet taste. You'll often see xylitol labeled as birch sugar. But this is incorrect, xylitol is not chemically a sugar, but a polyalcohol.

Warning: If consumed in excess, it can have laxative effects.
