Himalayan salt is originally a rock salt, yet it differs from ordinary rock salts. Pink salt from the foothills of the Himalayas is mined from a fossil deposit that is approximately 250 million years old. This quarry is located in Pakistan and is the second largest in the world. It retains its natural character thanks to the traditional method of extracting the salt in whole pieces and then processing it gently, i.e. only washing, sun-drying, sorting and crushing to the required size. Throughout the processing process, Himalayan salt is not exposed to any chemicals, unlike ordinary table salt, which is refined or enriched with other ingredients (such as iodine).

The uniqueness of Himalayan salt lies mainly in its age. The place where it is currently mined in Pakistan used to be a primeval ocean. Thus, its purity has not been affected by man's activities, as is the case with today's seas and oceans.

Use

Pink salt has a mild taste compared to Himalayan black salt and is suitable for both hot and cold cooking.

Do you know the differences between the different types of salt?

Depending on how the salt is obtained, we distinguish between rock salt and sea salt. Rock salt is obtained from deep or surface mines where it has crystallised, while sea salt is obtained by evaporation from sea water and subsequent crystallisation. A further distinction is made between natural and refined salt. By natural salt is meant any salt which is essentially free from industrial processing. By contrast, we speak of refined salt, or, if you prefer, industrially chemically processed salt, when the final product undergoes many stages of processing.
